Join the Big Picture

A blog that aims to spark thoughts and inspire by seeking out and sharing works of art

Historically, artists have always worked big, and nowadays those boundaries are being pushed to the limits.

Large-scale art, whether in the form of photos from the Hubble space telescope, sharks floating in tanks of formaldehyde, rooms full of dots, concrete sculptures cast from Victorian buildings or hand knitted blankets wrapped around trees, large-scale art is all around us. Join the Big Picture aims to spark thoughts and inspire by seeking out and sharing these works.

All content by Karla Thompson, an ex-pat Aussie living in East London. When not working on Join the Big Picture she is part of the backbone to the Leonhard Pfeifer brand.

Clothing installation

Old news now for some but still an important issue, Marks and Spencers campaign for shwopping in the UK launched on Brick Lane.

Shwopping - a swap and shop campaign featuring Joanna Lumely is working towards a goal of reducing land fill. 5 minutes worth of UK clothing waste equals 9513 pieces of discarded clothing.

M&S transformed Brick Lane to show how it plans to give old clothes a future through its new fashion initiative.

I happened upon the set up for the publicity shot, and after a bit of caginess from the installation crew -- “What is this for?”… “I’m afraid I can’t tell you ma’am”… I was able to take a couple of quick snaps.

Even though it was not technically art, it was big and inspirational - and a little depressing when you really stop and think about it.
